A nice little book on the topic of Zen Buddhism.

Quite repetitive though.

Also relatively hand-wavy in a metaphysical sense, I feel like a lot of the spirituality talk is just playing with words and bending definitions out of shape.

This is probably just my mind speaking.

On the other hand it is true that the point that is being made is beyond a certain rigorosity of parlance, and the misty phrases, if you feel them, still convey something that can be felt and done.

A simple book on the topic of convalescence: recovery, return to health, rehabilitation.

A fine little thing full of reflections and thoughts on the feat of somehow getting back health after illness.

There’s maybe more references to other books and works than necessary, but it only confuses a tiny bit. Francis’ reflections are still very present and full of power.

His main argument is that of making care and recovery into a separate domain pretty much as important as the medica intervention itself. He explains that the thought of good aftercare being imperative to recovery was more present before the 20th century. In modern medicine we tend to focus more on the intervention itself and less holilstically.

As noted in the introduction this is one of Russel’s less heavy works, in the preface he himself writes:

This book is not addressed to highbrows, or to those who regard a practical problem merely as something to be talked abou. No profound philosophy or deep erudition will be found in the following pages.

This being Russel it still contains loads of deep sentences, metaphors and allusions to heavier material. Having read some of his other writing though I know this is of the softer sort.

The language is terse and simple but oh so very expressive.

The existential pleasures of engineering

As Florman mentiones in the beginning of this book it is not about existentialism in the sense of depressive European philosophy but rather about the existence and life of enigneers as professionals.

It is about development, technology, progress and the voices against these things. It’s about the present as well as the romatic relationship some have with the “more natural” human past.

Part 1

This part sketches out a brief history of engineering and development and uses this to talk about engineering moral and ethics. Florman poses that imposing a singular and monolithic code of ethics on the entire profession is nonsensical and even dangerous.

Entertaining and quite lovely book from the famous online columnist Cheryl Strayed.

Collecting various answers to letters from readers over the years, the book presents a wide range of issues, problems, doubts and questions. All of which are replyed to by Strayed who through a difficult life of her own has seemingly attained a great sense of humanity and wisdom.

As some of the essays in here really struck a chord with me I’ll be putting it together with The Meditations and Letters to a Stoic. In that way I’ll occasionally pick it up, read from it, and meditate on the contents.

A book I found in my grandmother’s bookshelf. She apparently received it as a member in some book club. Equally apparent is the fact that she did not read it 😁

In this book the prominent Norwegian philosopher and ecologisst Arne Næss puts forward some of his thoughts on life, how to live well, fundamental values and questions and emotions and their place in “life philosophy”.

He draws heavily on Spinoza and his concept of the internal voice: ratio that calls us from within but frequently becomes muffled by our way of living.

It’s section on the differential geometrical aspects of mechanics is particularily mathematically advanced; it rests on the foundations laid by differential geometry, and refers a lot to other texts for further coverage.

Anna Punsoda wone the 2018 Roc Borona price for this book which by many in the catalan litterary world has noted as shaking and upstirring.

A great, but dark, read.

A wonderful bilingual English-Spanish poetry collection from Neruda.

Neruda eloquently draws on nature and its workings to create heart-striking metaphors and imagery.

I enjoyed this book. It made me want to see things. It made me want to be considerate and thoughtful. It made me think of the women in my life in general and my relationship with them in particular.

Having these stories told by a woman with such close and extensive knowledge of the lives and situations of these women was enlightening. The epilogue is fantastic! It has to be re-read!

Basics

Quantum systems are fundamentally different from classical ones; the underlying logic is not the same
Classical waves are determined by frequency and wavelength
Waves can be standing or travelling
Standing waves have quantified values for allowed wavelength
Pauli principle: no two quantum particles in a system can occupy the same state

Energy

Molecules have a compound ground state lower than that of the separate atoms (therfore it’s stability…)
Fusion is the release of this difference in energy between the ground states
Fission is the use of the byproducts of the splitting of atoms into smaller fragments to extract energy
Natural Uranium only contains about 1% $U^{235}$
Reactor $U^{235}$ is typically enriched to 20% concentration
Weaponised $U^{235}$ typically is of 90% concentration

Electricity

Quantum waves in solids span the entire sample
Current involves a net difference in the flow of these “global” electrons
A current can flow given that there are available states around the Fermi energy
A material’s ion lattice create a gap in the state band structure
Given available states below the gap a material can conduct electrons

Semiconductors

A semiconductor does like an insulator have all its states below the gap filled
The gap in semiconductors are however in comparable size to typical thermal energies allowing some to be excited across the gap
The excited electrons and the leftovver states below the gap; positive holes can conduct electricity
n-type conductors have an excess of electrons
p-type conductors have an excess of holes

Superconductors

Quantum computing

A qubit is a (quantum) system that can exist in two states or a superposition thereof
Qubits can ensure secure key exchange for cryptographical applications. Eavesdropping modifies the quantum system irreversibly

In total

Copenhagen view of QM posits that hidden variables does not exist
Subjectivie theories postulates wavefunction collapse only when observed by “a concious agent” (human mind)
Hidden variable theores postulate the existence of some unobservable properties.
Because of Bell’s theorem, hidden variable theories can only be non-local (spooky action at a distance) breaking with relativity
Many-worlds theories possits that the world branches of at every point where a collapse is made.

A simple book about sex, love and relationships. Most of it is fairly common thoughtwork and some is based on Freud’s work.

Ideas at a glance

We grow up to be adults that monitor ourselves and our actions, expelled from paradise
We nevertheless wish to be accepted as we are
Physiological sexual reactions satisfy us because they are thought to override rationality
Sex does not last for very long. The post-coital mood is often bad.
Sexy people have symmetrical faces
We tend to tiptoe around what we want. Thus making others and ourselves suffer.
Sexual rejection is a case of bad luck rather than a serious moral judgement
Relationships can make us get to know our partners to well, thus inhibiting sex and eroticism

Already a bit dated in some aspects due to the rapid expansion of social networks, the internet and proliferation of technology in general. I find especially interesting the rise of OnlyFans, pornography and the Instagram-aesthetics.

The book is divided in two parts:

Sexual determinism and myths about biological differences

People with flawed claims

In the book Natasha Walter mentions several authors and works that apparently contain faulty or badly done research.

After reading this book I read Ishmael, which really drove the point home for me.

Geological time

This book stresses the notion and awareness of geological time and its immense relative size in comparison with our own lives and even all of human history.

An example of the geological processes in time and their rate is given: the rrosion of the Alps:

Mechanical an chemical erosion make the Alps loose 0.57mm of height every year on average. That is 1m in 17 000 years, or 1km in 17 million years. At this rate the Alps will be reduced to planes in 60 million years.

A fantastic book that cleary and fairly susinctly explains important aspects of special and general relativity and the concept of time.

Part 1

Outlines general effects of special and general relativity like: time dillation by speed and gravitation, partial ordering of events, extended present, time cones, spacetime curvature.

The developments from physics are presented as each giving rise to a ’loss’ of a certain aspect of time:

Loss of Unity: GR shows that time passes slower in a gravitational field; it’s not the same everywhere
Loss of Direction: the basic eqs. of physics don’t change under a temporal inversion, entropy giives rise to the ‘arrow of time’
Loss of the Present: SR demands that time passes differently for different observers
Loss of Independence; Newton’s absolute, external time is integrated in spacetime by GR

He then goes on to describe time quantisation in general terms.

Life 3.0

In his great book Tegmark explores the foundations, impact, meaning and possibilities for AI and ML in human history and beyond.

Importance of AI

Sketching out the history of our Universe, Tegmark then argues that it all -however physically interesting- is quite dull until a complex pattern able to maintain and replicate itself ie. life appeared. In chapter 1 Tegmark then talks about three stages of life:

1.0 simple biological - can survive and replicate
2.0 cultural - can “design its software”
3.0 technological - can “design its hardware”

Life 1.0 relies on its DNA for information exchange, whereas Life 2.0 in our cas uses synapses. ~100Tb in brain (10Gb electrically, 100Tb chemicallybiologically), ~1.6Gb in DNA. This classification is obviously a fuzzy one.

Structurally the story is laid out mostly as a conversation held between a New-York man and the Gorilla Ishmael - the student and the teacher. Interspersed we find some bits of narrative explaining what happens outside of their conversations. These external events are in a way secondary to the main themes of their conversations.

The premise of Quinn’s Ishmael rests firmly on two facts and an intepretation of Genesis.

Humans lived for three million years as the gods intended them to live - “in harmony with nature”. The peoples living then and the few who continue to do so around the globe are called Leavers by Quinn.

Kapittel 1 - Glimt fra skolens hverdag

Nivået til læreren ligger over det til eleven => bruker ord, begreper og termer tilhørende feltet sitt. Entusiastisk lærer, bruker standardisert time-liturgi: leksehøring, forklare, oppgaver.
Elevene differensierer skolen og resten av livet så mye at kunnskapen som de allerede har (om vann koker eller ei) ikkje er gyldig og at lærer må spørres etter “rett” svar (skolens hegemoni)
Anderledes opplegg (ideelle, utopiske opplegg) kan fungere men med mindre lærer kan roe ned kolleger og foreldre kan alt bli spolert.
Elevens kunnskap sees på som “unyttig” i skolesammenheng, dette pga. kulturmøter mellom ungdommens og skolens kultur skaper missforståelser.
Administrasjonen setter grenser for hva lærerne kan gjøre. Sensurlignende inngrep fra admin. oppleves mer som et overgrep under dekke av praktiske administrative hensyn.
Den selvkonserverende skolekoden som lærerne opererer under, brukes til å teste andre (da spesielt nye lærere). Koden fører nesten aldri til åpen diskusjon men heller kamuflerte angrep

Myte 1 - Eskimoene har så mange ord for snø

Opprinnelse: Artikkel av Franz Boas i 1911 (amerikansk antropolog). Forordet til “The Handbook of North American Indian Languages” nevnte Boas nærmest i en bisetning (selv om boken ikke skulle handle om eskimospråk) at eskimoene hadde 4 ord for snø. Men syndebukken er Benjamin Lee Whorf (brannforsikringsagent og hobbylingvist); opphavsmannen til “The Great Eskimo Vocabulary Hoax”. Han publiserte i 1940 (inspirert av Boas) en artikkel: “Science and Linguistics” (MIT Universitetsforlag), her pyntet han på Boas’ opprinnelige innhold. Antall ord var nå 7. Dette ballet på seg og rekorden for påståtte antall ord er rundt 400.
