Improvisation and ear training

Clark Terry

Jazz legend Clark Terrys’s tips for learning to improvise:

Imitate - listen, learn by ear, trascribe, absorb touch and time of a player

Assimilate - completely internalise concepts

Innovate - create fresh and personal approach

Interestingly the article quotes Dalí:

Those who do not want to imitate anything, produce nothing.~Salvador Dalì

However the only Catalan version of this quote I manage to find is:

Les persones que desitgen imitar-ho tot no acaben produint res de res.

Depending on how you think about them chords can be many things. Some basic notions and assumptions that one might come up with at first hand:

They consist of multiple notes sounding together

They can consist of notes from different octaves

The notes should be somewhat consonant (sound well together)

They can be “vertical” as well as “horizontal” as they can be arpeggiated and thus stretched out in time.

Hence we might say that:

It’s also important to control exhaling. Practice inhaling through your nose and mouth for about 4 seconds, pause and slowly exhale in a controlled manner for about 8-10 seconds. Practice this a couple times a day and it will help you to be a better singer in a week.

Andrés Segovia (1893 - 1987)

World famous virtuoso 20th century classical guitarist. Born in Linares, Jaén, resided in Andalucía and Madrid. Notable for:

having brought the (classical) guitar out from relative obscurity and into the spotlight of 20th century music

transcribing a lot of music for the guitar

affecting the design of the modern classical guitar
