Using a language as encryption

Languages are governed by certain laws/principles, that reflect the relationships between elements. For example, element frequency: you generally have a few elements which are very common, and a long tail of rare events.

To make a language hard to learn, break those rules. Make each word/phoneme/letter equally frequent. Common words are short and have several meanings, long words are rare and generally have fewer meanings (as they are more specific). Turn that the other way round. Make long words frequent and unspecific.

To avoid knowledge shields the US military, when it does accelerated training programs, avoids sequential curriculums and instead exposes soldiers to complex simulations and case studies that overwhelm them. Beyond the actual declinations and their construction there is their application, use and meaning, this is as important.

Cases

Modern Russian operate with 6+ cases depending on definition and who you ask. The normally given list is the following:

Prepositional

In addition to these one might also mention:

Locative: separate prepositional form for use with в/на
Partive genitive: genitive-ish in -у used for partives
Vocative: aged and not used except for in set phrases
Modern vocative: A relatively recent and quite personal vocative form

Also relatively hand-wavy in a metaphysical sense, I feel like a lot of the spirituality talk is just playing with words and bending definitions out of shape.

A simple book on the topic of convalescence: recovery, return to health, rehabilitation.

A fine little thing full of reflections and thoughts on the feat of somehow getting back health after illness.

There’s maybe more references to other books and works than necessary, but it only confuses a tiny bit. Francis’ reflections are still very present and full of power.

His main argument is that of making care and recovery into a separate domain pretty much as important as the medica intervention itself. He explains that the thought of good aftercare being imperative to recovery was more present before the 20th century. In modern medicine we tend to focus more on the intervention itself and less holilstically.

Yet, we complain that writing code with natural language is somehow bad. Using an AI to generate code seems off to many, using it to play Go or generate art is somehow cheating.

This is naturally determined by the age old question of what art is?

I guess in that sense, coding can be art, but it needn’t be.

Code is not literature
An essay or why code is not literature; a work of the art of language and prose but rather a foreign domain of organisms that we study.

But then it hit me. Code is not literature and we are not readers. Rather, interesting pieces of code are specimens and we are naturalists. So instead of trying to pick out a piece of code and reading it and then discussing it like a bunch of Comp Lit. grad students, I think a better model is for one of us to play the role of a 19th century naturalist returning from a trip to some exotic island to present to the local scientific society a discussion of the crazy beetles they found: “Look at the antenna on this monster! My brother looking for a job recently reminded me of some seemingly common contract practises I have come across earlier in my life. Notably the clauses that state somthing about what one does on ones spare time and/or after one leaves the job.

It seems that there typically are restrictive clauses in these regards. Something like:

We own everything you do
You cannot work a similar job after leaving this job
We expect you to dedicate yourself 100% to the company project/mission

etc.

I continued to modify and build on the house and the surounding area.

I traveled a lot.

In January I met Alexandra.

Shortly after meeting, we traveled a lot.

In terms of goals and lists, 2023 exploded my unset intentions and as such is an exception comparing to previous years.

In the large of it this does not matter though. Life is for living.

All my life I have been sneezing when relatively suddenly exposed to bright light. As an example walking out into the sunlight after some time inside. Usually it happens in bursts of one-three sneezes that are nigh impossible to hold back.

As for many things that happen in our own world we don’t question them all too much. I always found it a bit strange that I happened to sneeze like this, but not overly strange nor strange enough to research.

I do not have numbers so this remains an opinion but with the fact that computing systems have massively increased in complexity in mind, it is reasonable to assume that the numbers and topology of dependency trees have grown in size and complexity over time for most software projects. My reading queue is way to long and I have reads tucked away everywhere: Instapaper, Things 3, a reading.txt file.

Cleaning this up giving the number of pieces is going to be a complete mess.

But the only alternative is to nuke the collection, and then, probably, start anew…

The only long term solution is to change the way I do things and make new rules for the amassment of articles and content online. In this regard I have thought about starting to print the best pieces and articles. I bought a printer and intend to use it to this end.

Full disk encryption (FDE)

This means encrypting the entire disk of some system, at least most of it. It is then unlocked by a user wanting to use the system.

This is great if you loose your stuff while it is in an encrypted state. But it it is not then it won’t help you.

PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) and GPG (GNU Privacy Guard) are suites of tools ment to aid in encryption, decryption, signing, verification etc. PGP is propetrietary (Semantec) and GPG is open source. In essence the two are identical.

Moving around the internet one occasionally stumbles upon people’s PGP/GPG signatures and keys. These they share so that one might communicate privately with them online.

This seems nice enough but the entire format/protocol/suite has had and continues to have great problems and weaknesses and cannot be said to work as intended.

I foud an old iPod Classic lying around. I knew I had it, but now I actually found it.

But the HDD was broken and slow and the battery rather done. I figured there must be something one could do to fix that.

It was loaded with music which I hope to be able to extract.

For various reasons I have lately found myself drawn more and more towards open source software and thinking more about privacy issues.

For quite some time I have also been thinking about moving to a Linux/UNIX OS and a different laptop and computer system all together. This has been for many reasons:

I love my Mac, but it’s software opaqueness makes me doubt
I had a creepy experience during an Apple Support session wherein an Apple support agent could suddently control my Mac remotely. All Macs come with this software installed by default.
Macs are expensive.
MacOs does not run on other hardware
The long term perspective is unclear: new Mac with M Pro Max Apple Silicon processor every year?

I do however love the hardware build quality and Apple as a company does many, many things right I think.

Long ago, as many others, I started noticing the fact that Google search results for reviews and articles was basically filled to the brim with link farm content pages. Especially for Norwegian content in my case.

Email has been broken for years too with the amount of marketing and spam-y content coming in on the daily.

Purely moral concerns

Separating the concerns of earning and retention¹ is a nice way to argue for the morality of riches. The point is that whether you earn and deserve earning much money and whether you should retain it after the fact, are different and separate moral questions.

Thus, retaining wealth is imoral. Earning it is not.

There are obvious logical pitfalls that one can fall into by following these arguments too deeply. This sort of reductionism nullifies the applicability of the principles that could otherwise arise from a considerations like this.

Often discussed in relation to ecology and economic growth.

Economic growth must be separated from economic development. The former implies monotonic growth of consumption and production. The latter implies redistribution, changes in uses, improvement of methods of extraction, increasing efficiency and so forth.

Absolutely exhausting but brilliant movie. Mixing very emotional and human themes with the terrifying history of the Spanish civil war.

Almodóvar’s style reminds me of lesser Spanish movies (typically comedies) but his excellent storytelling abilities makee the movies be anything but.

Actually I’d dare to say that the semblance to this kind of movie enhances this one since the style make it seem so innocent and simple. This contrast between style and theme further adds to the gravitas.

This science podcast episode from Morgenbladet talks about the health properties of fish and in particular the Norwegian farmed salmon.

Environmental toxins accumulate more in animals in marine environments because of the longer food chains. Many species of fish are highly contaminated and are not healthy in that sense.

They also talk about the implications of close relationships between academia/researchers and business.

This article¹ in the Norwegian Harvest Magazine describes the central arguments of another English essay regarding sleep from 2003 by Roger Schmidt ².

Notably the dawn of the “modern lack of sleep” is set to 1650; the year of the introduction of caffeine in the form of tea and coffee to England and not (as is more typical) to the introduction of Edison’s lisght bulb.

The article also speaks of the introduction of modern time keeping devices and the disappearance of the old cyclical time in much the same way as the Danish historian Søren Mørch in his -in my opinion fantastic- book Store forandringer.

Wanting to start making chairs and some types of furniture I have bought some books.

Now, books alone might do for a mathematician but for woodworking you need tools as well.

I have chosen to learn to primarily work with traditional hand tools. This due to risk and cost factors as well as affinity for tradition.

General advice

Buy the best tools as you can afford
Quality is very important and really makes a difference
Tools must be maintained, and this must be learned
Skilled maintenance is as important as skilled use

Entertaining and quite lovely book from the famous online columnist Cheryl Strayed.

Collecting various answers to letters from readers over the years, the book presents a wide range of issues, problems, doubts and questions. All of which are replyed to by Strayed who through a difficult life of her own has seemingly attained a great sense of humanity and wisdom.

As some of the essays in here really struck a chord with me I’ll be putting it together with The Meditations and Letters to a Stoic. In that way I’ll occasionally pick it up, read from it, and meditate on the contents.

Very good. But long and a bit slow-paced. My parents did not really enjoy it.

According to the movie itself, it’s based on the Norwegian psychiatrist Finn Skårderud’s “theory” that humans are born with a BAC (blood alcohol levels) of 0.5 too little.

This “theory” however is really just some personal reflections on alcohol that he wrote for a preface of a book (Om vinens psykologiske virkninger - Admondo de Amicis).

A book I found in my grandmother’s bookshelf. She apparently received it as a member in some book club. Equally apparent is the fact that she did not read it 😁

In this book the prominent Norwegian philosopher and ecologisst Arne Næss puts forward some of his thoughts on life, how to live well, fundamental values and questions and emotions and their place in “life philosophy”.

He draws heavily on Spinoza and his concept of the internal voice: ratio that calls us from within but frequently becomes muffled by our way of living.

I enjoyed this book. It made me want to see things. It made me want to be considerate and thoughtful. It made me think of the women in my life in general and my relationship with them in particular.

Having these stories told by a woman with such close and extensive knowledge of the lives and situations of these women was enlightening. The epilogue is fantastic! It has to be re-read!

Quantum systems are fundamentally different from classical ones; the underlying logic is not the same
Classical waves are determined by frequency and wavelength
Waves can be standing or travelling
Standing waves have quantified values for allowed wavelength
Pauli principle: no two quantum particles in a system can occupy the same state

Energy

Molecules have a compound ground state lower than that of the separate atoms (therfore it’s stability…)
Fusion is the release of this difference in energy between the ground states
Fission is the use of the byproducts of the splitting of atoms into smaller fragments to extract energy
Natural Uranium only contains about 1% $U^{235}$
Reactor $U^{235}$ is typically enriched to 20% concentration
Weaponised $U^{235}$ typically is of 90% concentration

Electricity

Quantum waves in solids span the entire sample
Current involves a net difference in the flow of these “global” electrons

Ideas at a glance

We grow up to be adults that monitor ourselves and our actions, expelled from paradise
We nevertheless wish to be accepted as we are
Physiological sexual reactions satisfy us because they are thought to override rationality

A fantastic book that cleary and fairly susinctly explains important aspects of special and general relativity and the concept of time.

Part 1

Outlines general effects of special and general relativity like: time dillation by speed and gravitation, partial ordering of events, extended present, time cones, spacetime curvature.

The developments from physics are presented as each giving rise to a ’loss’ of a certain aspect of time:

Loss of Unity: GR shows that time passes slower in a gravitational field; it’s not the same everywhere
Loss of Direction: the basic eqs. of physics don’t change under a temporal inversion, entropy giives rise to the ‘arrow of time’
Loss of the Present: SR demands that time passes differently for different observers

In his great book Tegmark explores the foundations, impact, meaning and possibilities for AI and ML in human history and beyond.

Importance of AI

Sketching out the history of our Universe, Tegmark then argues that it all -however physically interesting- is quite dull until a complex pattern able to maintain and replicate itself ie. life appeared. In chapter 1 Tegmark then talks about three stages of life:

1.0 simple biological - can survive and replicate
2.0 cultural - can “design its software”
3.0 technological - can “design its hardware”

Life 1.0 relies on its DNA for information exchange, whereas Life 2.0 in our cas uses synapses. ~100Tb in brain (10Gb electrically, 100Tb chemicallybiologically), ~1.6Gb in DNA. This classification is obviously a fuzzy one.

The rate at which species go extinct in this way is called the background extinction rate¹. Estimating this rate is very hard and estimated rates thus differ greatly.

Mix for 3 minutes, cover with a damp cloth and leave for an hour to rest.

10g yeast
15g salt

After one hour, add yeast and salt and knead for 15 minutes (on slow speed if using a machine). Put in a lightly oiled bowl, cover and let leaven for at least 2 hours.

Lightly massage the air out of the dough. Divide in pieces of more or less 250g each and shape into balls. Cover and leave on a floured surface for at least 45 minutes.

The Zettelkasten (technique) as originally conceived by the sociologist Luhmann (who co-authored an impressive body of work) is a method for taking and storing notes. It is:

Julia er et relativt nytt høynivå programmeringsspråk med god syntaks for matematikk og modellering. Det lånes iherdig fra anndre språk som Lisp, Matlab, C, Matematica og Haskell. Det er et flerparadigme språk som støtter både prosedyrisk og funksjonelle kodestiler. Fra Lisp har også Julia fått metaprogrammeringsegenskapene sine, som er solide og kan brukes til å endre måten kompileren kompliserer og bygger kode før den blir gjort om til maskinkode.

Julia er et så kalt JIT-kompilert (Just In Time) språk som kompileres ned til native maskinkode rett før det kjøres på maskinen. Dette står i motsetning til:feks. Java som bygges ned til bytekode som så må kjøres inne en JVM (Java Virtual Machine); uten denne kan ikke Javakode kjøres. Python bruker også en annen tilnærming i det at det er et kommandotolket språk (interpreted) som betyr at koden blir parset og kjørt på samme tidspunkt; ingen kompileringsmellomstadie.

Når man utvikler en JS app med et moderne rammeverk har man i de fleste tilfellene behovet for å lagre og hente ut informasjon på tvers av applikasjonens struktur. Eksempelvis har man ofte behov for å lagre den innloggede brukeren slik at denne kan hentes ut der den trengs.

Ofte vil det også være et behov for at denne dataen skal lagres i nettleseren og ikke forsvinne etter hver økt, til dette brukes ofte localStorage. Da oppstår det et naturlig behov for å synkronisere dataen sentralt lagret i applikasjonen og informasjoen lagret i nettleseren, dette er kode man gjerne vil isolere og kun skrive en gang. Et såkalt store pattern vil kunne hjelpe med dette.

Kraftfulle verktøy er ikke bare for nerder.

Mange ganger når jeg laster jeg tekst fra internett trenger teksten og endres på en eller annen slags måte. Feks. når jeg laster jeg vokabularlister trenger jeg ofte å renske ut alle de ekstra tegnene folk putter inn, i tillegg må de restruktureres slik at de ender opp i csv formatet.

For mange er ‘søk og erstatt’ funksjonen en god redning, men til flere typer oppgaver er rett og slett ikke denne god nok. Det er her regex eller Regular Expressions kommer inn, disse lar deg søke etter spesielle mønster og hente ut akkurat det du vil ha.

Innføring i generell didaktikk

Kapittel 1 - Glimt fra skolens hverdag

Nivået til læreren ligger over det til eleven => bruker ord, begreper og termer tilhørende feltet sitt. Entusiastisk lærer, bruker standardisert time-liturgi: leksehøring, forklare, oppgaver.
Elevene differensierer skolen og resten av livet så mye at kunnskapen som de allerede har (om vann koker eller ei) ikkje er gyldig og at lærer må spørres etter “rett” svar (skolens hegemoni)
Anderledes opplegg (ideelle, utopiske opplegg) kan fungere men med mindre lærer kan roe ned kolleger og foreldre kan alt bli spolert.
Elevens kunnskap sees på som “unyttig” i skolesammenheng, dette pga. kulturmøter mellom ungdommens og skolens kultur skaper missforståelser.
Administrasjonen setter grenser for hva lærerne kan gjøre. Sensurlignende inngrep fra admin. oppleves mer som et overgrep under dekke av praktiske administrative hensyn.
Den selvkonserverende skolekoden som lærerne opererer under, brukes til å teste andre (da spesielt nye lærere). Koden fører nesten aldri til åpen diskusjon men heller kamuflerte angrep

Myte 1 - Eskimoene har så mange ord for snø

Opprinnelse: Artikkel av Franz Boas i 1911 (amerikansk antropolog). Forordet til “The Handbook of North American Indian Languages” nevnte Boas nærmest i en bisetning (selv om boken ikke skulle handle om eskimospråk) at eskimoene hadde 4 ord for snø. Men syndebukken er Benjamin Lee Whorf (brannforsikringsagent og hobbylingvist); opphavsmannen til “The Great Eskimo Vocabulary Hoax”. Han publiserte i 1940 (inspirert av Boas) en artikkel: “Science and Linguistics” (MIT Universitetsforlag), her pyntet han på Boas’ opprinnelige innhold. Antall ord var nå 7. Dette ballet på seg og rekorden for påståtte antall ord er rundt 400.
