Very(!) old (the first “true film” is said to be “A Trip to the Moon” from 1902).

Fun watch.

I suspect some narrative freedom was taken to fit its history telling to Soviet aims.

It came recommended as a good way to see what Novgorod actually looked like in medieval Russia.

Re-watched this classic comedy from 1990 that I watched first with my parents back in the days.

My brother Konrad of 13 years thought it funny. It’s very close to, but not quite there, slapstick nature makes for moments that all can enjoy.

Most of the jokes have aged well, but some will today be perceived as edgy.

I found the plot to be rather weak and it did not help me emphasize with the characters.

Good movie. No real winner in this plot and is in that sense quite reflected.

Didn’t fancy the gender roles and male control of female actions, destiny and wishes. But this is only natural given the cultural and temporal gap between me right now and the storyline.

Reminded me of how rich North America is (was) it’s like an hybrid Africa-Europe climate and resource wise.

Insane and crazy movie with a funny and interesting (very meta) plot that surprises you in its well-craftedness. Very Nickolass Cage-y!

A weird fusion between Holywoody and intelligent character-driven, but leaning towards the former.

Extremely and overtly violent. The hero is basically an antihero being pushed along in is quest for revenge by childhood trauma and dissapointment.

It’s thorougly sad in a way because this man, in his anger, destroys so much without really amending anything or leaving anything at all behind him. Except of course a pregnant woman with his future children.

Personally, too macho-fueled to my liking.

Absolutely exhausting but brilliant movie. Mixing very emotional and human themes with the terrifying history of the Spanish civil war.

Almodóvar’s style reminds me of lesser Spanish movies (typically comedies) but his excellent storytelling abilities makee the movies be anything but.

Actually I’d dare to say that the semblance to this kind of movie enhances this one since the style make it seem so innocent and simple. This contrast between style and theme further adds to the gravitas.

Fun and interesting movie. Lies on the “romcom spectrum” towards the more engaging and serious end.

Seems more interesting than the Hollywood ones though because of the culture differential.

Regarding the title (飲食男女)

The title is a quote from the Book of Rites, one of the Confucian classics, referring to the basic human desires and accepting them as natural.

The beginning of the quote reads as follows: “The things which men greatly desire are comprehended in meat and drink and sexual pleasure; […]” (Translation by James Legge), Chinese:「飲食男女，人之大欲存焉」.

Rewatched this with my brother Konrad. He’s totally loving the Ghibli movies and it is a joy to wath them with him.

As a any true Miyazaki movie it’s beautifully animated and has a multi-layered story.

Re-watched this after many years and it’s still really good. The CGI has aged very well considering it was released 12 years ago.

I love the theme and obvious connection to ecology of this movie; man vs. nature.

The constructed language featured in the movie is Na’vi.

What a peculiarly entertaining movie. The style is puppet-theatre-y and very Wes Anderson. Well written, filled with comedy and very beautiful in that the plot is “very human”.

Very good. But long and a bit slow-paced. My parents did not really enjoy it.

According to the movie itself, it’s based on the Norwegian psychiatrist Finn Skårderud’s “theory” that humans are born with a BAC (blood alcohol levels) of 0.5 too little.

This “theory” however is really just some personal reflections on alcohol that he wrote for a preface of a book (Om vinens psykologiske virkninger - Admondo de Amicis).

I first saw this movie in the theatre in 2014-2015 when it came out. And to be frank I was just about to leave half way through because of the slow progressionn and sometimes annoying characters.

It has however grown on me and I have come to enjoy it a lot.
