Practical and lacking decoration or ornamentaion. The furniture is made for its use.

Because of their religious beliefs, the Shakers thought the act of making something was in itself a sort of prayer. Thus making something well could be seen as an act of divine obligation.

Federal style

Use of: veneering, traditional joinery, heavy curves, elaborate details and patterns. Seems very US-governmental to me.
